How to Care for Nursing Bras – Washing & Maintenance Tips

Nursing bras go through a lot — daily wear, milk leaks, and frequent washing. With the right care, a good nursing bra can last your entire breastfeeding journey. Here’s how to keep them in top condition.

How Often Should You Wash a Nursing Bra?

Ideally, wash your nursing bra after every 1–2 wears, or immediately if it gets soaked with breast milk. Milk residue can break down fabric fibres and cause odour if left too long. This is why we recommend having at least 3–4 bras in rotation.

Hand Washing vs Machine Washing

Hand Washing (Recommended)

Hand washing is the gentlest option and will extend the life of your bras significantly:

  1. Fill a basin with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent
  2. Gently agitate the bra in the water for 1–2 minutes
  3. Pay extra attention to the cups and nursing clips
  4. Rinse thoroughly until no soap remains
  5. Gently press out excess water — never wring or twist

Machine Washing

If you must machine wash:

  • Use a lingerie bag to protect the bra from snagging
  • Select a delicate or gentle cycle with cold water
  • Use a mild, fragrance-free detergent
  • Fasten all hooks before washing to prevent them catching on fabric

Drying Your Nursing Bras

  • Air dry always — never put nursing bras in the tumble dryer. Heat degrades elastic and padding quickly
  • Reshape the cups while damp and lay flat or hang to dry
  • Dry in the shade rather than direct sunlight to preserve colour and fabric

Storage Tips

  • Store bras with cups nested inside each other (not folded flat) to maintain their shape
  • Keep in a drawer away from sharp objects that could snag the fabric
  • Rotate between bras so each one gets adequate rest between wears

Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Nursing Bra

  • The band rides up at the back even on the tightest hook
  • Straps won’t stay up or have lost elasticity
  • Cups have lost their shape or padding has shifted
  • Nursing clips are difficult to open one-handed
